Teacher Tip Tuesday

It has happened to all of us at some point in our career.  You start handing out worksheets and and students start working on them and then you realise that you didn't keep the hard copy.  AHHHHH!!!  Well here is a little tip to help you not make that mistake again.  Super easy and I PROMISE it does work.  All you need is a yellow highlighter and your hard copy worksheet.  Write copy across your worksheet and when you copy them the next time the yellow highlighter does not show up on your copies.  I do this all the time now.  I have even used a yellow crayola marker when I didn't have a highlighter available.

Freebie and a Giveaway: What a perfect combination!

UPDATE:  Dad had to end up having surgery to fix his displaced/broken cheekbone.  He went through surgery great and is at home resting now.  We are just so glad and relieved that it wasn't worse than it was.  For those that are wondering my dad was hit by a car on Thursday morning while out on his morning walk.  He was very lucky that he was able to walk away from it with just a black eye and broken cheekbone.  Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!!!

I'm linking up with Classroom Freebies for their Manic Monday.

I created this short u sorting center to go with my Reading Street story Animal Park.  Even if you don't use Reading Street this would still be a good short u sorting center for your kiddos.  I love the bubblegum and ladybugs!!  You can get it FREE by clicking on the picture.

Poor Dad, Currently, Shout out Giveaways

This has been one heck of a week. Let me tell you. My dear sweet dad got his by a car while crossing the street on Thursday. He is OK, just a few facial fractures and a very ugly black eye but no life threatening injuries. Praise GOD!!! The cops that came to the scene told him he needed to buy a lottery ticket because he was so lucky to walk away from it like he did.

On a lighter note, my conferences went very well last night.  At our school we have conferences on Thursday and have Friday off.   On Thursday we had school half a day with students.  They left around 12 and then we had until 3 pm to get ready for conferences.  They lasted from 3-8.  Mine were finished around 7:30.

I keep putting off getting my laminator and I really don't know why.  I plan on using some of my Scholastic points to get one but I just haven't done it yet.
I'm completely out of color in both my printers:(  The Hubs keeps complaining that I use it all but I'm the one buying it.  Isn't that the whole reason behind having a color printer to print things in color.  Go figure.  He needs to get with the program here;)
My poor hair has been neglected for long enough.  I really need a hair cut and then color all the gray.  I'm thinking I need an all about me day.  What do you think?  I think I deserve it after this week.
I just put out my Halloween/Fall books for my kiddos to look through and Cinderella Skeleton was a big hit as soon as it hit the book shelf.  They couldn't wait to hear the story.  It is such a good story for learning about describing words.  The story is written in a poem and it really is cute.  I plan on having my kiddos comparing it to the regular Cinderella story.  What was so cute was that several of my kiddos came to conferences and were excited to show their parents this book.  If it is in the Scholastic order form for October I'm sure it will be bought by several:)

Social Studies: Mexico

At my school the students don't have Social Studies books.  In fact I only have a teacher's book because it was sent as a display for the school to look at and maybe adopt which we didn't:(  Anyway I really don't miss not having books for the kiddos.  This way I am able to pull my own things together as long as I follow our school curriculum {of course;)}.  I teach my content by studying different countries.  We study Ireland in March and make leprechaun traps.  My firsties have already been asking about this project.
So the first thing I teach about is Mexico.  We learn about their flag, language, clothes, food, music and games to name just a few.  So today I had my kiddos make tambourines decorated with the Mexican flag colors.  We then listened to the Mexican Hat dance tune and tried to keep the beat with our tambourines.  I took a picture of my firsties holding their tambourines in front of their faces so I could post it here.

We made the tambourines out of 2 paper plates that had been colored and then stapled together.  I added a small handful of macaroni {because that was what I had in my cabinet on hand} and then finished stapling it closed.  We had a lot of fun and it was super easy to do.

Do you have a Social Studies book for your students?  If so which one do you have and do you like it?
I'd love to hear what you do fun for this subject.

Don't forget about Amy's giveaway!!  You still have time.  Someone has to win, it might as well be YOU;)

Super Easy Phonics Work

Just a quick post tonight.
I wanted to share something that I do with my kiddos just about everyday and they love it.  They erupt into cheers when I start because they know what's coming and can't wait.  And get this all you need is paper and 2 different color markers and a piece of white paper for each child.
We call it a 6 box and my kiddos really do love doing this.
Today we were learning about short a so we made a 6 box of short a words.

We brainstorm 6 short a words and I write them on chart paper or sometimes just on my whiteboard.
The short a is in orange and the rest of the word is in black {Halloween colors:)}.  I then drew a horrible beautiful picture of the word.  {My firsties are always telling me how great a drawer I am,  I think they might need their eyes checked lol}
The kids fold their paper long ways like a hot dog and then fold the hot dog into a wallet.  When they open their paper they have 6 boxes.  They then number their boxes and write one word in each box.  Next they draw a picture to go with the word and lastly color their picture.
Seriously my firsties beg me everyday to do this.  Here are a couple of their short a 6 boxes.

This makes a super easy phonics review and cost nothing, which makes it even better.  What do you do to review Phonics?  I'd love to know.
