Reading Street games

This weekend I worked on some math students booklets.  I finally finished my addition booklet and I really like it.  I think my kiddos will like it too.  Here it is if your interested.

I started revising my subtraction booklet and let me tell you math is not my thing.  I have that thing all messed up.  Luckily for me Barbara @ First Grade Delight is helping me by looking it over and pointing out my mistakes.  I don't think she realized how bad I was at math until she looked over this thing.  So anyway after looking at it I decided to go back to something I feel more comfortable with ... Reading.

At my school we have Reading Street and I like it fine.  I have made up a few little games for my kiddos to play on Fridays during centers to review the skill we had learned earlier that week.  I always play the game with my kiddos during guided reading time so they know what to do when they play it on Friday.

This week we will be reading Get the Egg! and learning about short e and initial consonant blends.  I made this simple little game to go over this concept.  The idea actually came from my teacher's manual.  The game is Cracked Eggs and it reviews both the short e and initial consonant blends.  Students piece together cracked eggs to make short e or initial consonant blends words.
Students then record their words on the included recording sheets.

This game comes with 18 short e cracked egg puzzles and 18 initial consonant blends cracked egg puzzles.
On recording sheet for the short e words and one recording sheet for the initial consonant blends words.
It's actually 2 puzzle games.  It's available at both my TpT and TN stores for only $1.50.

Don't forget about Amy's 100 follower giveaway.

Math Addition and some Giveaways

OK so if you look back at previous post you can come to the conclusion that I do better with Reading and Sight Words than I do with Math.  I struggle coming up with cute fun things to do with math and I know that it is reflected in my teaching of it to my firsties.  So this year I have decided to try and do better.  I have stalked searched the bloggy world for ideas and as usual you all have been so generous and helpful that I am doing better.  We have started addition in my room so I made up this Karate Chop Addition Math Booklet.  It is used similar to my sight word booklets.  I think it turned out really cute.  I love the Karate kids that came *from the pond.  This is available at both my TpT and TN Stores.

An Apple Kind of Day

Do you know whose birthday it was today???  If your a teacher you sure do, John Chapman or better known as Johnny Appleseed.  So today we did everything the apple way.  We read apple stories, did apple math, watched a Johnny Appleseed movie and learned about apple trees.  We were really busy and having a great time all day long.  Here are a few pictures of what we did today.

Sorry the picture is sideways:( Anyway we sang this song, Do you know the  the Apple man?  I'm not sure where it came from but I have been using it for 8 years now.  If you know who wrote it or made this worksheet let me know so I can give credit.

Natalee Appleseed here at her desk.  We made pot hats to wear.  Don't worry this little Appleseed is my very own;)

We colored and sequenced the apple cards and then went back and labeled them the correct ordinal number.

We also labeled an apple tree from Julie Gesin from her FREE Apples and the Common Core Pack.  This pack it full of great things to do with your kiddos.  We will be writing apple recipes on Friday.  Click the picture to go to her store to get a free copy.

Apples and the Common Core

We are so excited about tomorrow.  We are going on our very first field trip to Huber's Farm in Starlight Indiana.  This place is awesome!!  We will get to do all kinds of things at this place like listen to Johnny Appleseed's story from him, learn about how they take care of their apple trees, pick apples and pick a pumpkin.  We also get to go on a wagon ride to the orchard and pumpkin patch.  We can't wait.  We just hope there will be no rain.

Hope you had as great a day as we did.  How did you celebrate?  I'd love to add your ideas to my list for next year.

Math

Happy Monday Everyone!!  I hope it is happy at least.
Last week my firsties were working on ? number more and number fewer.  This was very difficult for them to do for some reason.  So I made up some Halloween math ladders to help them with this concept.  The packet has 5 pumpkin worksheets dealing with fewer numbers and 5 ghost worksheets dealing with more numbers.  There are also answer keys for all 10 worksheets.  This packet also works with number patterns too.  It's available at both my TpT store and TN store for $1.00.

For Manic Monday I have a freebie: 1 fewer pumpkin worksheet and 1 more ghost worksheet.

Crazy Weekend + Fry's 2nd 100 words + 2 to give away

I have had one crazy weekend.  First my firsties were so wild on Friday it was crazy.  Then I get home and the next door neighbor's kid hits my 6 year old daughter in the eye with a baseball then tells her not to tell on him.

My poor baby! What a black eye!

Then lastly some weirdo comes up and sits on our front porch and proceeds to pester us until he finally leaves about 20 min later.  It was very clear that he was tripping out on something.  Later the next day I find out that he was arrested for wanton endangerment and they are trying to bring up charges of sexual assault.  He was also trying to give Heroin out to some of the boys in the neighborhood too!  Are you kidding me?  My kids were around this guy.  Of course the Hubs was out there too making sure he stayed away from our kids and just watching him.  Hubs thought he was funny.  I wanted to call the cops myself but he really wasn't doing anything but talking to the neighbors so I didn't.  I'm glad someone else did!!

So anyway I finished my Bee Theme Student Sight Word Booklet {using Fry's 2nd 100 words}.  I really wanted some cute tweet birds but never could find what I was really wanting so I went with the cute bee and bee hive from the pond.  I love Mel's clip art and I'm very pleased with it now.  I'm still working on the teacher assessment pack to go with it.  I just can't seem to get that one finished.  I would however love to give 2 of my bee sight word booklets away to the first 2 people to comment below.  Please leave your e-mail too:) so I can send it!

This booklet is available at both my TpT store and my New Teachers Notebook store.  It is $4.00 at both but it is on sale 20% off at TeachersNotebook to Celebrate my Grand Opening.

Classbook Publishing For FREE!!

Yippee!!  Look what I got in the mail at school this week.
I am so excited!!
Studentreasures is a company that publishes books for classrooms.  And get this it's FREE.  Yes you heard me right FREE.  All I had to do was sign up and they sent me the complete kit for FREE.

We have until December to write our story and send it back to the company to be published.  This is the sample book they sent us.

Yes it is a hardbound in color book.  It is so cute and my kiddos are going to love it.
Here is what the inside looks like.

Colored student drawled pictures and writing.  So cute!!
Once we have written and illustrated our story we send it back to the company and they will turn it into a book for us.  Parents and Grandparents will then have a chance to buy a copy of our book for around $19.95.  Not bad in my opinion.  In fact my little bee is in my room this year and The Hubs has already said that we would buy one for her to keep.

The kiddos even have a cute sticker to wear home when the order forms go home too.

I know they are going to love this too!!

Here is the best part.  Even if every parent sends back a No I don't want a book form, we still get a FREE one for the classroom.  How cool is that!?!  There is absolutely no obligation to buy.

So now I know you are wanting one too and here is the link to their site Studentreasures.  Check out their site they have different types of book formats to choose.

I would love to know what your book would be about?   I need some ideas;)

Have a great weekend!!

Sight Word Record Keeping

Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far.  I know that I am.  The Hubby and kids are next door playing and watching the UK vs UL football game.   Go CATS!!!  I'm here at home playing around on the computer.  Something I have not been able to do as much since school started.

I had some questions about how I use my sight word pack and I thought I would post a little about it as I use it.

First I hold everything in a binder.  I currently have a 1 inch binder but I can already tell I'm going to need at least a 2 if not 3 inch binder.  Here is the cover of my binder.
Aren't those owls cute!!

The first part of the binder holds my class graphing sheets.

{Sorry for the bad pic.} I have all of my students names on this sheet and I'm able to highlight each list that the student knows.  In a quick glance I can see which list each student is working on.

Here is where I will write each student under the list they are currently working on.  This will make is super easy for me to pull students into groups and work on the list they need help with.

Next in my binder is my Individual student record sheets.
There are those cute owls again!

Each student has their own record sheets.  I will write the date at the top of the column and then check off the words that the student knows.  Once they know all ten words on the list they move to the next list.

That is the record keeping part of the pack but there is so much more to it.  The preview of the pack shows one of each item that is included and right now it is on sale for $4.00 in my TpT store it goes up to $8.00 after the sale.    Click here to go to my store and check it out.

I like it so much that I am now working on Fry's second 100 words.  I just know that some of my firsties are going to already know all of these and I need to be prepared to challenge them with the next set.

Don't forget to check out Crystal's 100 follower giveaway.  It ends soon so hurry up.  I'm helping out by donating an item so if you win you could choose my Sight word pack.  Click her button to get there and enter;)

Have a great restful weekend!!
